The PS3 Controller's Rubber buttons, and most of the plastic ones (the non-analogue ones, ie the face buttons, start, select, etc) work by rubber conductive pads touching a circuit board.
Of course this is prone to failure by overuse or age (or enthusiastic play!) because the carbon on the pads can foul or the rubber can tear or lose its shape.
Easy to fix, very simple to swap out. You just need the right screwdriver, and a bit of patience.
